A new study published in Nature Geoscience on Friday shows Antarctica's green cover has increased 10-fold over the past 40 years.
Vegetation cover, mostly mosses, expanded from 0.4 square miles in 1986 to nearly 5 square miles in 2021, with a 30% acceleration between 2016 and 2021.
Scientists from the Universities of Exeter and Hertfordshire used satellite imagery to analyze vegetation levels in Antarctica, which is warming faster than the global average.
In summer 2024, Antarctica's average temperature rose up to 50 degrees Fahrenheit above normal, while in March 2022, some areas experienced temperatures 70 degrees Fahrenheit above normal.
Experts discussed at a conference in Chile in August whether Antarctica has reached a tipping point of accelerated and irreversible sea ice loss from the West Antarctic ice sheet.
