Archaeologists Locate Ancient Battle Site Using Declassified Spy Satellite Images

On November 12, 2024, researchers from Durham University and the University of Al-Qadisiyah announced the discovery of the Battle of al-Qadisiyyah site from 636/637 AD.
The team used declassified 1970s US spy satellite images and historical texts to identify the battle location, 30 km south of Kufa in Iraq.
This battle was a pivotal moment in history, marking the Arab Muslims' first significant victory in their expansion beyond Arabia.
The site features a fort, double wall, and a 6-mile wall, now mostly incorporated into agricultural land or destroyed.
The discovery is part of a broader project mapping archaeological sites across the Middle East, with plans for future excavations and surveys.
