On January 2, 2025, the Sports Ministry announced that Murlikant Rajaram Petkar would receive the Arjuna Award (Lifetime) for his achievements in para-swimming.
Petkar, India's first Paralympic gold medalist, won the 50m freestyle swimming event at the 1972 Heidelberg Games, setting a world record.
Kartik Aaryan, who portrayed Petkar in the biopic "Chandu Champion," shared a heartfelt congratulatory message on Instagram for the para-athlete.
Petkar's journey from a war veteran injured by nine bullets to becoming a Paralympic champion inspired the film "Chandu Champion," directed by Kabir Khan.
The award ceremony will take place on January 17, 2025, at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where President Droupadi Murmu will present the award to the 80-year-old Petkar.
