Zakia Jafri, widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri (killed in the 2002 Gujarat riots), died in Ahmedabad at 86. She became a symbol of resilience, waging a 17-year legal battle to hold leaders accountable.
Her husband was among 69 killed in Ahmedabad’s Gulbarg Society during riots triggered by the Godhra train burning (59 karsevaks died). Zakia annually visited the massacre site until 2023.
: In 2006, she accused then-Gujarat CM Narendra Modi and officials of conspiracy and police complicity. The Supreme Court-appointed SIT gave Modi a clean chit in 2012, upheld by the SC in 2022.
Teesta Setalvad hailed her as a “compassionate human rights leader,” while AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi praised her fearless fight against “India’s most powerful men".
The SC dismissed her 2022 plea, calling allegations “motivated,” and criticized “disgruntled officers” for fabricating evidence.
